Why do I hope to visit Disney World in 2012?

Why do I want to visit in 2012?  The new things of course.  The Fantasyland Expansion has lots of new things coming.  ToonTown is gone, but out with the old and in with the new!

Some of the things opening in February of 2012:

Storybook Circus will have double the Dumbo fun!  There will not be just one flying Dumbo ride, but two!  Do you remember the Goofy Barnstormer roller coaster?  Well, it’s back and it’s called the Great Goofini. A great roller coaster for small kids and it stars Goofy.

Then in the late fall of 2012 there is even more fun coming to Disney.  There will be a new castle for the Beast.  Inside will be the “Be Our Guest” dining room.  Belle will have a village and will be telling stories again.  I hope Ariel’s new ride will be ready in 2012 too.  Last time I was in Walt Disney World®, I could see the stone walls being built where the ride will be. I’m so exited the new things are coming! There is a lot of cool stuff I can’t wait for. I hope you’re as excited as I am about these new attractions. So don’t wait!!! Call and book your trip today with the www.themouseexperts.com.

There is more coming in 2013 but I can’t wait that long to visit when all these exciting new things will be opening!

Ride Quiz #1. Peter Pan’s Flight

I thought I would start something different today. I’m going to post some Disney ride quizes to see just how much you know about Disney World. Some of the questions will be easy, but others will be challenging. Since some of the answers would be nearly impossible unless you had just gone on the rides, they will be multiple choice so you can guess on the ones you’re not sure about. If you’ve been to the parks recently, you should find this a little easier. However, if you’re stumped, you can probably find most of the answers with a Google search.

The first quiz will be on Peter Pan’s Flight in Fantasyland at the Walt Disney World Resort. I will add the answers at a later time. Good Luck!

Win a free FastPass for a day for your entire family.

Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney World

Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney World

A few weeks ago, we learned about a fun game at the Magic Kingdom. Every morning, cast members hide five paint brushes on Tom Sawyer Island. The lucky ones who find these brushes are rewarded with fast passes for the day for their entire family! Cool, I thought, as I started planning my ‘hunt’ around the island. How hard could it be? Right?

The first boat to the island left the dock at 10:00 this morning and we were on it. Our plan was to split up so we could cover more ground and then report back at a certain time to see who had found a brush. We hit the ground running (literally). A quick trip around the island made me realize just how hot and humid it really was, even at 10am.

I figured it would take us about 15-20 minutes of searching to find a brush. Well….it didn’t quite work out that way. After 30 minutes of intense searching in the heat and humidity, we knew it wasn’t going to be easy. We looked behind trash cans, throughout every nook and cranny of the fort, under chairs, and in the bushes. We even looked throughout the three caves on the island, where we had to use the light on our phone to search in the dark. Still nothing. And we weren’t the only ones having a problem. I asked several other people how they were doing and none of them had found a brush either. So much for stumbling on a brush; these were hidden well.

Hidden paintbrush on Tom Sawyer Island

After an hour of searching in the heat, we headed back to the boat without a paint brush, and more importantly, an all-day FastPass. Overall we had a lot of fun, and if nothing else, it was something different to do. We go to the park enough that I didn’t mind losing an hour where I could have been doing something else. If you don’t make it to the park often; however, I would suggest skipping this scavenger hunt and enjoying the rides instead. But….. you never know, you just might be the lucky one who finds a paintbrush and gets to enjoy FastPasses for the day. Good luck!

Top 10 reasons to visit Disney this summer!

Summertime at Walt Disney World

Yes it is hot in the summer. Yes it may rain briefly in the afternoon but there are many reasons to go to Disney this summer. Last June we went and we found it less crowded than our trip in October. We believe it is because so many people have been told to go in October that this has become a peak time. October is actually one of our busier months for clients now. So yes it will be hot and there will be crowds but we can help you manage those things and with all the promos Disney has come out with, there are fewer off season times than in previous years.

1. Everything is open! Attractions are not closed for refurbishments.

2. Extended hours. You can actually budget better than during other times of the year; ask us how. No matter when you decide to visit Walt Disney World in Orlando, the fact is there are always going to be crowds, especially for the rides and shows. During off-peak times, Disney cuts back hours at the parks and may not have as many ride vehicles going. This allows them to reduce manning; however, wait times end up being nearly as long as they may be during the summer time. So by going when there are extended hours when all of the attractions are open and having a plan for when you travel, you will be able to enjoy more and have a more flexible vacation.

3. Break up the summer. We all start the summer refreshed, loving the pool, and spending time with friends, but soon it all comes to feel like another schedule. Break it up with a trip to Disney, either short or long. We can help you experience a little magic either way. You don’t HAVE to set an entire week aside for Mickey.

4. If you do have some extra time, Wizarding World of Harry Potter is now open at Universal Studios and Sea World is offering $5.00 tickets this summer for kids! Take a day-trip to one of these fun places.

5. New things to see this summer include a new parade and new fireworks. Not to mention a dance party at Hollywood Studios and Tower of Terror has mixed it up.

6. Major airlines pricing roundtrip air in June/July from:

Huntsville, $148          Boston, $192

JFK, $238                      St Louis, $174

Detroit, $169                Chicago, $193

Charlotte, $158           Houston, $276

Atlanta, $138               Washington DC, $155

*Low-cost carrier rates may be lower. Subject to availability. Pricing at time this was published.

7. Time to get together with family and friends. We find this time of year is the easiest time friends and family can all get time off to get together. Turn it into a family reunion. There are so many things for folks to do at Disney. If you have members in your party who say they don’t like the parks, there is always golf and fishing, or even the Richard Petty race car driving experience. There is something for everyone and the summer affords the time for most to gather together and enjoy one another. Not everyone has to sit around the house all day and do the same thing together. They can all go off and do their own thing at Disney and meet up at the end of the day.

8. Throw some fun and entertainment into your summer. When I was young, my parents use to drag me to boring museums in the summer with no thrill to them. Then we would head to Cedar Point for one day of fun each summer. Why not do it all in one trip? There is so much to do at Disney; it is 47 square miles, and it is both fun and educational. You can learn about recycling while playing a game (in the AC), build a rollercoaster while doing math (in the AC), see how they are growing the next generation of plants on a boat ride (in the AC), or fly over California in a hang glider on Soarin’ (in the AC). See a theme here?

9. Savings this summer. Prices as low as $860.88 for a family of four, two adults, two kids (between the ages of 3 and 9) for four nights and five day tickets. Kids stay and Play Free, Free dining, up to 40% off resort rooms, so many ways to save money!

10. There’s no time like the present! Don’t wait any longer to head to Disney for some summer fun and excitement and to build memories you and your family will never forget. Call us today to help you plan the trip of a lifetime.

My memories of Space Mountain

Space Mountain is back open after a nearly six month rennovation where everything from tracks and queues were rehabbed. At one point, the roof was even off  and track was being pulled out and put in. From the video I have seen, the qeues are really cool. You can play video games while waiting in line!

This takes me back to my first trip to Disney World©. I went with my dad when I was ten. My parents are divorced and it was a special father daughter trip. We had a blast! My dad, still in my mind can do anything, he is a salty sailor and seems to be fearless. So when he said “let’s go on Space Mountain”, I wanted to show him I was too. But the whole time in line, I was scared to death! Keeping in mind this was the early 80s, there were no fast passes and no interactive queues, so you looked at what they had on display and made small talk while waiting in a very long line. Close to the end of the line I had to go to the bathroom so badly, I nearly had an accident but refused to tell my dad and get out of line. We rode the ride, I got off and looked at him and instantly realized, I had found the thing my dad did not like, coasters… But he did it for me as he did not want to disappoint me, thinking I wanted to ride it. He says now he was waiting for me to chicken out.  I remember that day like it was almost yesterday. It wasn’t my favorite thing I had done and I wasn’t running to go back and get in line but I had conquered a fear and was proud I did it. Now, throw me on it, I am fine but I will always remember that fear in my stomach and the thrill of riding it first with my dad. That trip was full of memories and to think 28 years later, we have a business that started with a love for a place that first came into my life on that day I conquered Space Mountain.

Dad and I in front of the castle in the early 80s

My next trip is over the holidays. I can’t wait to see the changes to Space Mountain, my dad might be making the trip with us, think I can get him back on it? I bet the kid expert  can…..

Disney Mobile Magic Application

A GREAT new application just came out for Verizon subscribers that puts a virtual personal tour guide of the Walt Disney World® and Disneyland® Resorts right in the palm of your hands. It’s the official Disney Parks Mobile Application and the soft launch just became available to download. The application provides valuable information for you such as attraction wait times for the park you are in, Disney’s Fastpass® Service return times and the ability to located your favorite characters using your mobile device. It also has built-in GPS technology that displays park maps that pinpoint your location. By providing location-specific, real-time guides for each of Disney’s parks and resort hotels, you can find what you’re looking for more quickly, navigate the park with confidence, and spend more time enjoying yourself in the park. It also has live competitive trivia games, videos, character stories and other surprises to keep you entertained while waiting in line at the park. This soft launch will provide the opportunity to fine-tune the application to better prepare us for their official launch in January.

Unfortunately, this app is currently only available on select Verizon wireless phones. For those of us with Blackberrys, we’ll have to wait until January to see if they are added in the final version. Here’s the list of phones the app is currently available on and some of the various screen shots you will see with this application:

This app is available for download for $9.99 per 180 days of service. To purchase the application, text the word MAGIC to 2777 from your Verizon phone. I see this as a small price to pay for all of the conveniences this app provides. As far as I know, it’s the only one using real-time data. There are others out there, but they all use statistical analysis. When it comes down to making or missing a pop-up character greeting for your child’s favorite character, there’s no question in my book as to whether or not it’s worth it.

Shanghai Disneyland Given Green Light, by Gil Pohl

Disneyland Shanghai

Shanghai, China. Location of new Disney park

After almost twenty years of working on getting a Disney park in mainland China, the central government has given its final approval for construction of a Magic Kingdom in Shanghai.  The other parts of the resort, hotels, and shopping do not require central approval.  The detail planning for the resort is now underway between Disney (who will own about 40% of the venture) and the Shanghai government.

The plan is to open the park in 5 to 6 years and I for one am planning my trip already!

Disney Fairies, by ‘Kid Expert’ Nattie, age 10

Tinkerbell, at the Walt Disney World® Resort

Tinkerbell, at the Walt Disney World® Resort

The Disney Fairies became extremely popular in Disney’s movie Tinker Bell. Now you can meet and talk to them, or maybe even ask them some questions! You can meet them back in Toon Town in the big tent. You need to get there early because lines can get to 45 minutes in the first 10 minutes of opening. Disney takes care of these crowds by getting you into groups before the Toon Town section opens. TIP: Make sure you grab a times guide before you enter the park, because Toon Town and the other lands don’t open the same time as the opening of the Magic Kingdom.

When a cast member asks you to “fly with them” to meet the fairies it simply just means the fairies are ready to

Disney Fairy Fawn at the Walt Disney World® Resort

Disney Fairy Fawn at the Walt Disney World® Resort

see you. You walk down a hall and every thing gets bigger, so it seems like you are getting smaller. Once you’re down to fairy size, you go into a room with the fairies in there. All the fairies are not there at once, but Tinker Bell is always there. When you approach them, they may ask you where you flew from or ask you if they can sign your leaf journals (a.k.a. autograph books). One time Fawn told me that I was 40 seasons old! She told me to stop growing because then I will become a grown up. Meeting the Disney Fairies was a really cool experience, and I recommend it to everyone.

Possible Little Mermaid attraction at WDW

There’s quite a buzz lately about the new Little Mermaid attraction at the Walt Disney World® Resort starring Arielle  . While no one knows exactly what it will look like or exactly when it will be finished, here is a video that shows an example of [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBUMRk-nkdA]what this ‘under the sea’ adventure may be like. This video is from the 2-Disk Special Edition of  “The Little Mermaid” (Released October 3, 2006). It was originally rumored to be built at Disneyland Paris, but that idea fell through.  If it does end up like this concept, it sure looks to be a fun ride. We can’t wait!

If you have heard of any other rumors or have other pictures/video, please let us know. Although no one knows what the finished product will look like until it’s done, it’s always fun to look at different ideas. And… it helps build the excitement too!

D23-What I should have been doing this month, by Gil Pohl.

For the first time ever, Disney brought everything Disney under one roof, even if that roof was a very large one.  Disney hosted the D23 Expo (D for Disney and ‘23 for the year the Disney Company started) at the 800,000 square foot Anaheim Convention Center September 10-13.  The Expo covered Disney animation, movies, TV, and most of all the Disney parks.

Because I could not be there this year and my overwhelming interest in everything to do with Disney parks, I spent as much time as I could following the happenings on the internet.  Thursday and Friday were busy days for D23; but Saturday was the day I looked forward to most.  Saturday was the day that D23 had scheduled a lot of time to discuss plans for Walt Disney World.

Rumors have been flying around the internet for months about the two big projects that might be coming to WDW and to the trill of us park lovers both where officially announced on that Saturday.

The first is the reworking of the Star Wars attraction at Disney Hollywood Studios.  Star Tours has always been one of the great rides at Disney, but the ride is getting dated.  I can remember that a few years ago when I was watching the pod racing scene from the first of the three new Star War movies I told my wife; “They should remake the Star Tours ride with this as the theme.”  While after years of waiting, the dream is coming true and during my 2011 trip to the World I will be experiencing it in 3D.

The other big news is that the first major expansion to the Magic Kingdom in over 20 years will be starting later this year.

Map of new Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom

Map of new Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom

The most popular land in all of the Magic Kingdom, Fantasyland, will be growing much larger in size and adding several new attractions.

The big new “E ticket” ride, Journey under the sea with Ariel, The Little Mermaid that is already under

Little Mermaid attraction in the new Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom

construction at Disney’s California Adventure will be coming east.  Also to

Dumbo's Tent at the new Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom

Dumbo's Tent at the new Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom

be constructed is a new twin-Dumbo ride that will be part of a new interactive, three-ring circus tent.  There will also be a meet and greet area for Tinker Bell and her friends.  Plans call for a Disney Princess castle, cottage, or chateau where you can share a dance with Cinderella; celebrate Sleeping Beauty’s birthday with the Good Fairies; or join Belle in an enchanting story performance in the Beast’s castle library.

Another big addition to the Magic Kingdom will be a new restaurant to be themed around Beauty and the Beast to be named “Be Our Guest”.  Here you will be able to dine at a counter service restaurant during the day and enjoy table service at night in one of three enchanted dining rooms inside the Beast’s castle.  Additional table service dining is much need in the Magic Kingdom.

I know that I soon will be working with Ears of Experience to plan a trip to next year’s D23 Expo and looking forward to them planning trips for me to see the new attractions coming to Walt Disney World.

Welcome Gil to the Ears of Experience Team!

Gil and his wife Vicki are big Disney Park fans.  It started with trips to Walt Disney World while they where in college and has continued throughout their lives.

Gil served in the USAF for 21 years and would take the wife and two kids (Mary and Mike) on Disney Vacations between each assignment.  They where stationed outside of LA for four years and everyone that came to visit them had to have a trip to the “Happiest Place on Earth”.

When he retired on the East Coast from the USAF and the children got older, they wanted to bring friends along to share their now every other year family trip to Walt Disney World.  In order to accomplish this, a membership in the Disney Vacation Club (Boardwalk Villas) was purchased by the family.

Now that he has two grandchildren (Violet and Tyler); additional DVC points have been added and they make annual trips to WDW.  Two of his friends also have joined the DVC and this year they will be having an early December Magical Gathering of 27 family members and friends.

Vicki and Gil still do some traveling to the other Disney Parks and with their June 2009 trip to Hong Kong they have been to all five Disney Resorts.  The two of them also celebrated a wedding anniversary on a cruise on the Disney Magic.  The plans for the next few years call for a trip to WDW for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, a second cruise and a trip to Shanghai is already in the planning stages.
